Sudha
was a delegate at the IYLF and presently based in Kolkatta. She is actively involved in Art of Livings activities in Ghatsila, Bihar.
Dr. Lavanya comments after reading the whitepaper on digitisation of Indian manuscripts:
seems v interesting indeed, .. wo'ld love to follow how this actually
translates to *real work*, starting with identification, digitizing,
storing of manuscripts (where will you store them ? put them on
a site which is initially accessible only to the team perhaps ?)
If they need a permanent home, you could perhaps make them
part of the Ashram Archives...
Perhaps the digitized manuscripts should not be made open-source, until
and unless a well-considered decision to make them open-source is made.
This is an important point and you should check with Gurudev about
this.

specific issues on BVB, I provide the clarifications in
ad-seriatim;
a) Bhavan,
Puthucode Kendra has a dedicated Department of Sanskrit headed by Dr. Manoj
and AOL could enter into a tie-up with Bhavan's Puthucode Kendra in the above

b) BVB
with Dr. Manoj can offer the following;
i) Bhavan's,
CSA can offer a database of scholars all over India.
ii) We can
provide the office-room to coordinate local activities for carrying out
digitalisation work.
iii) Yes, we
can carry out the work as stipulated by AOL.

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is a one of the largest Cultural organisations
in the world formed mainly for propagation of Sanskrit by Dr. K.M. Munshi
in 1938 (www.bhavans.info) and Bhavan's
Puthucode Kendra has dedicated itself in this task and mission since its
inception in 2000. AOL is probably the largest spiritual NGO organisation in
the world and therefore I do not see any problem in having a formal tie-up
between AOL and Bhavan's Puthucode Kendra for the common cause of
saving and preserving our precious manuscripts in which there are only
national and no commercial interests involved for either AOL or
Bhavan. Whatever approval is required from Bhavan's Puthucode Kendra
for the above project, I can get the same.

There is a possibiolity of collaboration with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan repreesnted by Dr. Ananthanarayan..
There are certain issues that we need to thrash out.
Ananthanarayanan’s mail gives rise to the following questions:
a)
Do we tie-up with BVB? (BVB is Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan)
b)
What is BVB offering us?
i)
A database of scholars through CSA
ii)
An office room to coordinate local
activities related to digitization of work.
iii)
It will carry out the
work as stipulated by AOL within admissible conditions.
iv)
It can appoint persons ,
monitor their activities.( AOL would pay for them,provide them with necessary equipment)
v)
Allow AOL to feed into CSA server any academic detail of scholars who can help with the entire digitization work.
vi)
BVB will coordinate the entire activity provided AOL backs it up.
c)
Who can help us in exploring the legalities
involved in a possible tie-up with BVB?
d)
What are the legalities involved?

We seek an office room for our preliminary work at the Ashram.

Who can volunteer to do the groundwork for us at the Ashram….talking, negotiating,
networking with the team, facilitating in the decision-making process…?

Develop an identity.

the IYLF , our group had undertaken to fulfill a specific goal: How do
we rediscover the knowledge being lost in Sanskrit works?
It was unanimously accepted that :
A colossal loss stares us in the face if we do
not take urgent steps to retrieve the priceless, ancient wisdom of our country, enshrined in our Sanskrit works.
After
an intensive brainstorming session that was skillfully facilitated by
our resource person, Rajeev Srinivasan, we formulated an actionplan:
1) Create a digitally
documented national database.
HOW?
a) Contact universities for ancient Sanskrit manuscripts.
b) Launch a
nationwide quest for ancient Sanskrit manuscripts
c) Keeping the Bangalore Ashram as our base,a compilation of the manuscripts can be done.
d) Digitise the Sanskrit works.
e)
Networking: Regional coordinators would: i) facilitate the work at their level
I ii) update one another on the progress
made

2) Create a panel of Sanskrit scholars who would facilitate in the accurate interpretation of our Sanskrit works.
3) The
National Institute of Science,Communication and Information Resource is
putting together Traditional Knowledge Digital Library(TKDL) - an
electronic encyclopaedia of our country’s ancient scientific heritage
in 5 international languages- English, German,French,Spanish and
Japanese. Can we see their endeavour as a forerunner to our own
project?Our quest will encompass ancient Sanskrit manuscripts relating
to all fields.
4) At Kolkata, we will be in touch with Jadavpur University and Ramakrishna Mission for vital leads.
Thus
, we seek to create a digitized national database that will eventually
contain the collective wisdom of our glorious heritage.
The actionplan awaits ratification from the group.
