Summary: I'm making Jetpaks for colleges and universities I think are worth a look, with a focus on their computer science departments. This one is for Caltech.

Personal Comments

You need really high SAT math scores to get in. o_O They have some bad Princeton Review rankings: class discussions rare, professors get low marks, and it's the #6 toughest to get into. There is a huge inbalance of females and males. I'm thinking this school is not for me.

School Statement

One of the most highly regarded science and engineering institutions in the world, the California Institute of Technology is home to some of the brightest students and faculty, who share the mission of investigating "the most challenging fundamental problems in science and technology. " A small but focused institution, Caltech provides one of the best student-to-faculty ratios (3: 1) and has long promoted interdisciplinary research, both of which make possible exceptional research opportunities for undergraduates. Its faculty and alumni have received 31 Nobel Prizes. For students with a passion for science and engineering, Caltech offers the consummate learning experience. A beautiful campus, nestled in the heart of Pasadena, enjoying a year-round pleasant Southern California climate, Caltech also operates outstanding off-campus facilities including Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the Palomar and Keck Observatories.

What Caltech Students Say...

Techers may debate whether they are technically geeks or nerds, but nearly all agree that theirs is a truly odd lot. Reports one from the "geek" camp: "The typical student here is a geek. I'm a geek. You're probably a geek too, if you're considering Tech. Of course, the list of things we do in our 'spare time' is diverse. You get geeks who play musical instruments, geeks who play sports, geeks who drink beer and smoke pot, and geeks who run around in winged monkey suits saying 'Whee!' (I kid you not), but we're all geeks." Within these parameters, "There are a lot people here who are interested in art, music, or literature, philosophy, history, and all manner of supposed humanities." As at most tech schools, "The guy-to-girl ratio is ridiculous. It creates an environment where guys can turn into infatuated/stalker types for a girl that would never get a second glance at her high school."
