Charly's

FLAGSTAFF. This restaurant-bar boasts charm galore, thanks to cozy fireplaces and its presence in an historic hotel. Ambience is terrific, and the menu features everything from steaks and burgers to seafood, sandwiches, and Southwestern fare. The bar scene attracts all sorts of folks, thanks to great draft beers, a full bar, and happy hour specials that comfort stressed wallets. Pool tables and open-mic nights increase the fun, and live music is frequent (both bands and vocalists).

FLAGSTAFF. It's not exactly the sort of age-old place you'd encounter in Dublin, but this Irish pub maintains a good-natured camaraderie among its patrons nevertheless. The inviting place sees a lot of business, whether it's folks stopping in for Irish-inspired food during the lunch hour or kicking back with a draught Guinness when the workday's over. Popular happy hours increase the pub's appeal, and you'll even find live music from time to time.

Joe's Place

FLAGSTAFF. Distinguished by large brick arches on its facade, this bar appeals to folks of all tastes and persuasions, young and old, polished and rough, college kid and working man. The pervasive appeal is Joe's relaxed ambience, along with patrons' shared taste for cold beer, live music, and good times. Pool tables stand ready for a little friendly competition, and folks are always ready to strike up a conversation too. Musical sets usually happens on weekends and consist largely of blues, rock, and heavy metal.

Maloneys Tavern

FLAGSTAFF. During the day, this tavern is a pleasant place for lunch and to catch the game on TV or to socialize with friends. Come evening, though, it becomes more boisterous and is a favorite collegiate gathering spot. A menu of pub fare includes burgers, sandwiches, and appetizers, and a full bar is available, including martinis, margaritas, vodkas, and tequilas. FLAGSTAFF. Daytime patrons find plenty to love about San Felipe's, whose Baja-style Mexican food features substantial south-of-the-border standards with lots of seafood. When the evening begins, however, things get a bit rowdier, and folks flock to the place for regular drink specials and loads of fun. Adding to the exuberance are live bands, who play frequently to eager crowds. If that's not enough, you'll even find bar-dancing on occasion, courtesy of patrons moved by the spirit - or, rather, spirits.

The Alley

FLAGSTAFF. Simple, rustic furnishings set the scene inside this much-loved establishment. It's an ideal destination for well-priced drinks, and everyone takes advantage of its ambience and affordability. On weekends, especially, the place is packed, as patrons crowd in to hear bands play in the back room. The sound system is great, and the rhythms compel club-goers to show off their best dance moves. All sorts of tunes fill the place, from alternative to progressive and jazz, and pool tables add an extra dimension to the variety of pastimes.

Uptown Billiards

FLAGSTAFF. An upmarket clientele pays homage to beer and billiards at this classy establishment, which is as good for meeting business associates as for catching up with friends. Although there can be a line on weekend evenings, you can pass the time considering which of the 40-some imports and microbrews you'll try once inside. Culled from around the world, the selection is awesome, and servers are well-informed about the stock. A full bar is also available, and plenty of regulation pool tables mean that you'll feel like a pro when banking a shot or breaking the rack. No smoking allowed.

Wine Loft

FLAGSTAFF. Bathed in light and featuring mellow brick walls, this place is sophisticated without being pretentious. Art peppers the walls, and conversation is animated and frequent. An abundance of by-the-glass wines includes domestic and international varieties, and more than 200 bottles are available for purchase. An extensive list of bottled beers also appears, bolstered by a good number of Belgian brands. Appetizers complement the drinks, and live music is scheduled as well. In addition, the Loft hosts special tasting events on a regular basis.

Zoo

FLAGSTAFF. This funky roadhouse, built in 1931, sits on Route 66 and is most familiar as the Museum Club. These days, the place is a well-loved country-and-western club, marked by trees rising from the floor, a menagerie of stuffed animals (real, not toy), and an elaborate, Victorian mahogany bar. Live music is frequent on weekend nights, and although it's usually country, you can also expect to hear rock, reggae, and blues. A large wooden dance floor invites folks to kick up their heels, and there are also karaoke nights, football-watching Sundays, DJs, and drink specials. A must-visit chunk of local color.
