Nafura
is an architecturally award-winning restaurant built right into the
walls that enclose the Old City. The menu is traditional middle-eastern
with a touch of Armenian. Summers, lunch in the garden; winters dine
inside by the fireplace.

In
the next alley over from Nafura, just inside Jaffa Gate, you can spend
the whole evening between the internet inside and the cheap Belgian
beers outside under the Middle Ages stone archway.

From
the roof of the Gloria Hotel, known for inexpensive accomodation for
backpackers, there's a phenomenal view of the Old City rooftops, the
Mount of Olives, and the timeless road to Bethlehem. Even non-guests
can take the stairs right up!

Christmas
eve in the Lutheran church on the way to the Holy Sepulchre, people of
all faiths and nationalities light candles under three levels of arched
loggias and join in song at midnight.
WorldGuide: Israel & the Palestinian Territories
Close
inside the New Gate at the Knights' Inn, you rest from a rough day
conquering Jerusalem with a beer in the Crusader-period courtyard. And
you can feel safe staying here - knight's armor at each door and photos
of the popes overhead.

Native
American Indian music plays to wake you up as a red and gold band
slowly rises behind the two huge rocks above the camp site. As the sun
comes up and Monument Valley becomes more that just a silhouette on the
horizon the true beauty of this incredible is revealed.
WorldGuide: USA
There
are few places on earth that feel as alien as the pyramids of Tikal,
emerging from a forest canopy that stretches to the horizon. Standing
on top of Pyramid IV, the tallest of hundreds, you are able to watch
first light spread over the jungle and ruins of an ancient
civilisation; just as the Mayans may have done centuries.
WorldGuide: Guatemala
It
takes a few hours to walk to the summit of mount Sinai, made all the
more difficult as, if you want to see the sun come up, most choose to
walk in total darkness. The summit is freezing and dozens of people sit
huddling together to wait for the sun. Dawn brings with it view of the
mountains as well as much needed warmth.
WorldGuide: Egypt
A
small white sailing boat docks on the island whilst it is still dark.
As you sail off into the Caribbean, bioluminescent microorganism flash
green in the dark water. As the wind gently blows you towards the
sunrise, there is little to do except watch as the sun rises above the
crystal blue sea and tropical islands.
WorldGuide: Belize
Masada
stands about 100 meters above the Dead Sea and the surrounding terrain
of the Judean desert. A climb to the summit early in the morning will
reward you with a view seen in biblical times; the sun rising above the
mountains of Jordan, over the Dead Sea and this unique landscape.
WorldGuide: Israel & the Palestinian Territories
The
sky is a deep blue and as the sun comes up against the hills of the
Gobi Desert the remains of the Great Wall can be seen for the first
time. As the day gets lighter the train travels even closer to the wall
and later completes the epic journey to Beijing.
The
Red Rose City turns into a palette of deep colours as the day ends. The
suns rays reach into areas of the carved facades that have not been
seen in the harsh desert light and as the sun sets a band of golden
light gradually snakes to the top of the valley; the last rays
highlighting the craftsmanship of these ancient carvings.
WorldGuide: Jordan
This
monolith of orange rock grows out of the desert in the Northern
Territories; made all the more impressive by the expanse of nothingness
that surrounds it. The suns first rays reveal its pitted surface as the
rock unergoes its trademark change of vivid colours.
WorldGuide: Australia
After
four days spent following the Urubama river through the mountains of
the Inca trail, the warmth of the sun is almost as welcome as the first
sight of the ancient stone ruins at the peak of the final summit.
WorldGuide: Peru
‘The
most extravagant monument ever built for love’ is stunning at any
time of the day, but at first light the early morning mist from the
Yamuna River gently shrouds the building; it’s magic to be slowly
revealed as the day progresses.
