Summary: Kenya is the country many people think of when they imagine Africa's vast sweeping plains covered with wildlife. It is a country of great wildlife diversity with a large variety of habitats from high snow capped mountains, to vast deserts, lush forests and spectacular beaches. The Masai Mara escarpment and plains are full of wildebeest and rare black rhino. It is this diversity of habitats and the geographical location of Kenya between several different evolutionary centers that makes Kenya such a wildlife gem.

Summary: Travel Warnings are issued when the State Department recommends that Americans avoid a certain country. The countries listed below are currently on that list. In addition to this list, the State Department issues Consular Information Sheets for every country of the world with information on such matters as the health conditions, crime, unusual currency or entry requirements, any areas of instability, and the location of the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate in the subject country.

Summary: Botswana is equal in size to France or Kenya and is striking in that vast flat deserts, like the Kalahari, cover most of the land. What makes the country even more spectacular is the "inland sea" called the Okavango Delta. The water that flows into the Delta comes from thousands of miles away in central Africa and creates an ever-changing oasis for wildlife. Lagoons, winding waterways, reed beds, and mopane and acacia woodlands make up a diverse and rich landscape where one never knows what may be around the next stand of trees.

Summary: Formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana adopted its new name upon independence in 1966. Four decades of uninterrupted civilian leadership, progressive social policies, and significant capital investment have created one of the most dynamic economies in Africa. Mineral extraction, principally diamond mining, dominates economic activity, though tourism is a growing sector due to the country's conservation practices and extensive nature preserves. Botswana has one of the world's highest known rates of HIV/AIDS infection, but also one of Africa's most progressive and comprehensive programs for dealing with the disease. CIA World Factbook
