Gastown - Heart of Vancouver

Gastown

Gastown Steam Clock

This attraction celebrates the origin of Vancouver! In exchange for a barrel of whiskey, smooth-talking "Gassy" Jack Deighton convinced local loggers and trappers to build him a saloon they all could share.

Highlights to watch for include:

  • The world's first steam-powered clock at the corner of Water and Cambie.
  • About a block east on the other side of the street, tucked behind 12 Water Street, is Gaoler's Mews.
  • Two buildings of historical and architectural note are the Byrnes Block - on the corner of Water and Carrall streets - and the Hotel Europe, at Powell and Alexander streets.
  • On the west side of Maple Tree Square, at the intersection of Water, Powell, Alexander, and Carrall streets, a statue of Gassy Jack Deighton stands where he built his first saloon.
  • New to this historic district is the Storyeum. A multimedia trip back through the history of British Columbia, from the proud heritage of First Nations to the modern wonder of Vancouver.
