Owen and Was, who met in a college screenwriting class, penned the screenplay for a thirteen-minute short that gained enough attention at the Sundance Film Festival to land the boys a contract to make it into a feature. Luke, Owen, and Andrew Wilson would remain recurrent actors in Anderson's later films, as would Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh continue composing for Anderson.

A collaborative work, Bottle Rocket was the first movie of Wes Anderson and both Luke and Owen Wilson, who would become prominent actors in Hollywood.
