The village of Kovachevitsa is huddled up in the ridges in the remotest south-western corner of the Rhodopes, about 1,050m above sea level. Its dwellers number 50 people. Kovachevitsa is simply out of this world – so very detached from the modern-day surroundings. It is like a piece of Heaven created by nature and moulded by the skilful hands of the local craftsmen – builders, stone-masons and wood-carvers. Its charming, narrow, cobblestone streets and the unadorned beauty of its proud, tall white-facade houses, with stone-slab roofs and huddled whispering eaves, are a unique example of the Bulgarian architectural genius.

Most of the houses in the small village of Bojentsi were built during the 19th century and are remarkable for their originality and their style, characteristic of the times of the Bulgarian National Revival. They are two-storeyed, with stone roofs, verandahs and gates with rich wood-carving.

This is an architecture and ethnographic reserve well known in Bulgaria and abroad for its original Rhodope architectural style, musical traditions and history. It is located on the two banks of Shiroka Luka River and is 12 km from Pamporovo Resort and 24 km from the town of Smolyan with which it is connected with a regular bus line. Shiroka Luka is the centre of a region of 5 villages (Stoikite, Gela, Stickal and Solishta) populated by Christians and Muslems. It was founded after the most massive forceful conversion of the population of the Rodope mountain into the Islam during the Turkish domination (17th century).

The small museum - town of Koprivshtitza is a lovely ensemble of Revival houses nestled in a valley amid wooded hills at an altitude of 1,060 m. Although burned several times over the ages, the town has flourished again thanks to its craftsmen and merchants. The woollen cloths and carpets of Koprivshtitza became known throughout the Ottoman Empire. The prosperity of the town expressed itself in the building of impressive churches, bridges and private houses. The spirit of past days is felt behind the heavy, nail studded gates. It was here that the first shot of the April Rising was fired in 1876. Although unsuccessful, the April Rising aroused sympathy all over Europe and caused the outbreak of the Russian-Turkish War of 1877-1878.

Rural Tourism

Programs of various duration (of one or several days) are used. Tourists are put up in a village house where they are offered ecologically pure local foods and drinks. They also get familiar with the agricultural activities and with the local crafts. If they wish so, tourists could take part in the daily chores of the farmers, as well as in brief training courses in Bulgarian culinary and crafts.
