E3 Wrapup: Xbox 360

The joke was, going into E3, that somebody should bring a tumbleweed into Microsoft's booth and take a video of it rolling through the empty aisles. Ha ha. We all had a good laugh. I'm not going to say we all had to eat crow over this, because in terms of foot traffic the Microsoft booth was seriously out-trodden by the PS3 area and Wii line.
You could actually go into Microsoftland and swing your arms without knocking over a single journalist. You could breathe , draw air in to your lungs with that crisp, freshly machine-recycled aftertaste, without even the slightest hint of sweat and/or Friday-unwashed fanboy rank.

This didn't mean, however, that we came away unimpressed with what Microsoft had to offer. On the contrary! We were quite into it. My impressions below.

Body Pad

Body Pad

Summary: The BodyPad is a full-body controller optimal for fighting games like Tekken, Soul Caliber, and Dead or Alive. When you punch, your player punches. When you pull back and lunge into a face-crushing head-butt, your character executes the move with full effect. And when you kick (well, you get the idea). I only hope that I don't need to be able to kick that high in order to play the game.

PS3's Official Ins and Outs

Both the 20 GB and 60 GB versions of the PS3 will include four USB 2.0 plugs, Bluetooth 2.0 support and wireless controller support.

Only the 60 GB version will have a built in MemoryStick/SD/Compact Flash Reader, though a rep told me that you can just plug a regual reader into the PS3 using a USB plug.

The 20GB will support ethernet, while the 60 GB will come with 802.11 b/g support.

Both versions will support 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p output, though only the 60 GB version will have HDMI out. Both will also have AV multi-out and digital audio optical out.

Both versions will come with a read-only BD/DVD/CD Drive that can read Bluray at 2x, DVD at 8x and CD at 24x.

And for those wondering the device is 325 mm wide, 98 mm tall, 274 mm deep and weighs 5 kg.

The original spec sheet said the PS3 would have two HDMIs out and two ethernet ports, so not that much has been lost.

No PS3 Pre-Orders Until October, Says Gamespot/EB

We recieved official word today from the GameStop tactical planning group that GameStop and EB Games locations will not be taking preorders until Early October for the Playstation 3. Obviously, I can't post links as it is all internal at this point, but other employees could back me up if they've seen this.

It seems that they are going all out against a repeat of the 360 preorder issue, which of course GameStop and EB was blamed for... even though Microsoft had promised ten times what each store actually launched with. This seems to be the most fail-safe way, but I wonder how long any kind of "call list" might be by October. There are at least fifty people on our store's alone in May.
